The car lobby has had a century-long grip on our communities. We're here to change that: Big Bike is ready to redefine our streets. ⤵︎
So what’s a B-Corp anyway?
A B-Corp, or “Benefit Corporation”, is a type of company that aims to do more than just make a profit. It balances making money with having a positive impact on society and the environment. B-Corps are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment, not just their shareholders. In short, they use their business to do good for the world. Some notable B-Corps you may have heard of include Patagonia, Ben and Jerry’s, Etsy, and Allbirds.
For BikeGarage, we incorporated in the state of PA with four enumerated benefits. Per company bylaws, on an annual basis we must:
Fund protected bicycle, pedestrian, or micro-mobility infrastructure
Reduce carbon emissions through promoting active transportation as an alternative to driving
Reduce traffic congestion through creation of high quality multi-modal infrastructure to reduce car dependency
Support initiatives that encourage active lifestyles through cycling
What’s on the roadmap for bikegarage?
That’s a great question! We have big plans for the future. BikeLockers aren’t the end goal—ending bike theft and encouraging cycling is. To do that, we need to think bigger. Lockers are expensive on their own, less secure than a staffed facility, and they’re funding bigger and better ideas.
The BikeGarage Business Plan
-
Our endstate is a network of lockers covers the Philadelphia region, allowing for safe storage of your bike whether hitting the town or the country. Wherever you go, you can rest assured a locker will be available for you with a reservation system and virtual key access on your phone. A power outlet inside specially designated lockers allows you to drop your electronics off to charge (including your e-bike!). Philadelphians are able to ride throughout the city and region with the confidence that their bike will be out of the elements and secured while they are away from it.
-
Alright, maybe not bike parking garages. These "garages" will have ample indoor climate controlled bike parking like racks and shelves, as well as limited shower facilities for anyone commuting to not show up to work sweaty. These will primarily be located around Center City Philadelphia, and will be staffed to allow for 24/7 access for members only.
Access will be controlled via phone, and all BikeGarage customers with a locker rental will be able to use these garages as part of their membership. This allows you to rent a locker near home, commute to work, and the whole while have your bike be safe and secure.
-
As an added perk of membership, BikeGarage will eventually offer cargo bike and trailer rentals. These will be offered in convenient locations (Ikea, anyone?) for daily use, for those times you need a little more hauling power but don't want to shell out hundreds of dollars for something you only use once. Plus, where would you even store such a thing? Leave the maintenance to us with hassle free reservations and even pickup and drop-off services.
what’s the timeline on all this?
The company was incorporated in August 2024. We are currently determining the best permitting method for operating in Philadelphia, establishing our business plan, and fundraising. Our goal is to begin constructing and installing lockers by Q1 2025 on a mix of public and private property.
Performance Criteria:
At least 15 sets of bike lockers (approx. 10-20 lockers in each set) installed by the end of 2025
3 bike parking garages by the end of 2026
A fleet of 5 e-cargo bikes and 5 trailers by 2027, for customer use
